The DS VS PSP Flame War
Recently we posted an article about the graphics difference between the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. The intentions we had with the article where totally different to the responses we found in the comments section. In a way we could have expected the article to get flamed but strangely enough something bigger evolved. Let’s take a look shall we…
After closely studying the comments the following were the ones most mentioned:
“The DS has better games period”
Yes this is a PSP dedicated site but we always look at the opinion of all the parties involved. OK, so the DS has better games. Is this statement actually true or is it just some heavy over exaggerated rumor created by DS owners?
Now we can sit here for hours and list all the good games on the PSP but DS owners can do exactly the same making this argument pretty pointless. We decided the best option would to visit GameSpot and see what the reviews scores had to say about this.
Total amount of DS games that scored 80% and higher = 47 as seen here.
Total amount of PSP games that scored 80% and higher = 72 as seen here.
Keep in mind that this is not my scores but the figures provided by GameSpot.
“Who cares about graphics?”
If you like 2D graphics or if you’re a fan of Mario then please get yourself a DS. We honestly have nothing against the DS but this statement is really pointless. Playing a pixilated racer or 3D platformer sucks, and that’s why game sites like IGN and Gamespot provide a graphics quality score as well.
“The PSP is just another gamegear”
Where on earth did the gamegear sell over 30 million units? Comments like this only make you look like a fool.
“Everyone here must be on drugs”
In a way we have to agree. You should have seen the 30 odd comments we deleted.
“The PSP will never outsell the DS”
We seem to have fortune tellers here too and also keep in mind that the PSP recently outsold the Wii, PS3, 360 and PS2 combined in Japan and yes it also outsold the DS.
We can seriously go on about this but in a way we actually admire people who stand up for the things they love. It’s just a shame the majority of DS owners seem to be arrogant kids.
How to leave a proper comment 101:
Ok, so you like the DS. Here’s how to leave a proper mature comment:
The proper way: Yes, the PSP does have impressive graphics but I prefer the games found on the DS as they cater more for my tastes.
The wrong way: PSP sucks! DS FTW…DS pwns the world! Bwhahahha..
The proper way: The reason I prefer the DS over the PSP is due to the touch screen and dual screen. I’m also a real fan of Mario and Zelda games.
The wrong way: PSP is for sissies! Noobs!
Please feel free to read the comments provided by your DS friends and see how they embarrass you. The article was purely about the graphics (for those who care about graphics) and had nothing to do about the consoles or the games.

DS dual screen is to small BOOOOoooooooo
Yes DS has its credit were it deserves it, but i also like my ds, snes, sega cd, gameboy advanced, snk , ps1 games on my psp, not to mention that it has all those other wonderful applications u can attach to it.
Yes DS is good but that PSP is in a whole other level.
GOD OF WAR, another reason to fall in love with that little black box all over again!
Interesting and fair response to the comments about your initial article.
Just something interesting with regards to the game list. If you look at the PSP top 10, you got a variety of great games across different genre's...
Tekken - 3d Fighter
Daxter - 3d Platformer
Final Fantasy VII - RPG/Fantasy
Patapon - Music (Rhythm game)
MGS - Stealth (FPS)
Burnout - Action Racing
Lumines - Puzzle
Syphon Filter - Stealth (FPS)?
World Soccer - Sports
Wipe Out Pure - Future Racing
The DS top 10 games are of the same mould, maybe 2 or 3 different genres....
PSP judged exclusively on games is superior, love my PSP !
PSP FTW!
Quote: PSP FTW!
lol, I take it this comment was on purpose.
Good article. I personally own both and they both have their advantages. DS is just fun, but if I want to get wrapped up in a game for a few hours then PSP has what I want. Syphon Filter, Killzone, GTA...those are the types of games that are not possible on the DS or at least no one has done them.
I had a PSP and I replaced with a DS. Both are great machines. The PSP has more computing power, the DS a better interface. However, in the end, the DS fit inside my pocket whereas the PSP is to bulky for that.
I believe the PSP is a great machine but not a good portable.
Hey bro, do you know why I totally Love yer blog??!! You list the things that IGN etc, will never do. These sites are afraid of comments etc, that will make them look bad. You on the other hand is as straightforward as can be and that is why I really dig ya site. You don't really care about teh negative feedback since you're just listed the facts and ofcourse your opinion.. Kickass..I'll be a reader till this blog dies.
and yeah...I own a DS and PSP! PSPSA FTW!!! peace out brother!
err...thanks...I think :/
I know that this is not a real proper comment but please just ignore the DS rants for the sake of your own mentallity. I'm sorry to say that most DS owners are kiddies and that explains the real unmature comments that you get. Have you ever seen anybody in high school play DS? I know that you have no problem with the DS but seriously, these kids are just gonna irritate you. Ignore them and rather post reviews and stuff since any articles containing the word DS VS PSP will just attract the unwanted kids to your site.
My PSP can play porn and my DS can play porn so I'm happy with both :D That's why I got them handhelds in the first place :D
lol, are you serious? You actually bought yourself a DS and PSP to watch x rated material? Wow, the comments are just getting weirder everyday.
Wow i never realized how well the psp compares to the ds with games. now i can shut my friend up whos favorite argument is
"that doesnt matter, the ds has better games"
howmany of those psp games can be found on ps2
Just wanted to point out that gamestats.com is listing 65 DS games at 8.0 or over vs. the 78 PSP (I could also point out that the DS have 5 games 9.0 and over where as the PSP only has 3, or that the DS has more games at 8.5 or over then the PSP). I only point this out to make the point that reviews are simply opinion. One of my favorite games of last generation as Theif Deadly Shadows for the Xbox which didn't have nearly the score(Average of 7.8) of one of the other games I enjoyed last generation (Resident Evil 4).
Honestly I'm at a loss to why there is a "war" between the two as they're both very different pieces of hardware. I mean seriously, who really plays their portable system? Maybe 3 weeks of the year I'm playing a game on my portables. As long as each puts out one game a year that I want to play I'm set.
I think a fair comment on the reviews of gamespot on both DS and PSP will not only come in number but come in originality. A glance on the list for PSP will find no doubt that over one-third of the good-reviewed games are ports from PS2 which received the same good reviews in their own right. Of course, the port should also be praised if made well. But the number simply wiped out all the creativity in the making. Seen from the sheer huge number of PS2 titles, if more efforts were made for PSP ports, the DS will not stand a chance at all. The gamespot reviews always disregard any originality and in these days, originality is highly rated because novelty is so short-lived.
Yes, I agree there are more good-reviewed games on PSP than on DS. But, personally, I have to stress "personally", I hate to play the same thing over again even if the new ports are now mobile. I own a PS2 and Xbox, but I never get the same title on both consoles even the reviews are good. This might not fully apply to this case, but most of the time, it comes pretty close.
BTW, I started playing electronic games when game and watch was out.
Just one more comment, the case of PSP now is a lot like you playing Monopoly. For a guy who reviews Monopoly as a game, he should sing its praise, whether it is an electonic version or not. It is exactly what gamespot is doing. But for consumers like each one of us, will you go crazy if an electronic version comes out for PSP or DS? But for those who hasn't played it at all, will they not like the game?
My earlier comments stay true if you have the PS2 console and have played most of the titles appearing on the PSP. But if you are not, then PSP is definitely a good buy at any moment.
hey guys i think we should argue more about what portable handheld is better. i think that's a perfectly reasonable way to spend our time, because it's important to justify every purchase we make if we don't want to lose face on the internetz. in fact, just now i bought some bacon and flamed a vegan message board instead of eating it.
how about we just play our games and just stop bothering with who thinks they're teh kiddie and who doesn't?
seriously, sony currently has a net worth greater than the country of new zealand. something tells me they'll be alright without your support.
While I will agree that PSP graphics are almost always considerably better than those on the DS, I wouldn't use that as a criteria for picking which handheld to buy.
Personally I don't see a reason why any respectable gamer wouldn't own both considering their current price point, but if somebody came to me asking which handheld they should pick up I wouldn't mention graphics.
I own both and upwards of 12 games each per handheld, and take both with me most places. Depending what I want, I have quite a few options across either platform.
Advance Wars // Yoshi's Island 2 // Mario Kart // NEW Super Mario
Lumines // Crisis Core // Metal Slug Anthology // Patapon
You really can't lose with either one.
I totally agree with tdh. Every one of us should get both handhelds if we are any serious gamers at all.
